Enhancing Public Health Decision-Making with UC Merced
We partnered with UC Merced to develop a custom ROI calculator and website, empowering public health researchers to evaluate the economic impacts of health interventions.
The University of California, Merced, in collaboration with UC Davis and community partners, initiated a project aimed at improving public health decision-making by integrating health economics and behavioral economics into public health practices. A key component of this initiative was the development of a custom Return on Investment (ROI) calculator and an accompanying website to assist public health researchers and agencies in evaluating the economic impact of various health interventions. This project received initial funding from the California Department of Public Health as part of their strategic plan to adopt financing models for targeted prevention interventions, especially for high-risk and underserved communities in California.
Creating a reliable ROI calculator for diverse health interventions required integrating complex data sets while ensuring adaptability across various public health scenarios. In close collaboration with our software development partners at D2i Technology, we successfully developed a tool that not only met these challenges but also seamlessly integrated into a user-friendly, Webflow-based website. This approach empowers the UC Merced team to easily update training program materials and provide a centralized, accessible platform for the calculator.

The project team developed a comprehensive website in Webflow, Behavioral and Health Economics for Public Health, which serves as a central hub for resources, training programs, and decision-support tools. Key features included:
- Custom ROI Calculator: A tool designed to estimate the medical costs of selected chronic diseases, providing state-level estimates by gender for five age groups. This calculator aids public health agencies in assessing the economic impact of health interventions.
- Training Programs: Self-paced courses in Behavioral Economics and Health Economics for Public Health, each comprising four modules. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate from the California Department of Public Health.
- Personalized Training: Opportunities for public health agencies to engage in targeted projects, applying behavioral and health economic techniques to specific public health challenges.

The implementation of the ROI calculator, website and the comprehensive resources provided on the website have empowered public health professionals to make informed, economically sound decisions. The training programs have enhanced the capacity of public health agencies to apply economic principles in their work, ultimately contributing to more effective and efficient public health interventions across California.
